Why Warrnambool Res Feels Like Home

When Emily made the decision to move away from her small hometown in regional South Gippsland, she knew she wanted more than just a place to live - she wanted an experience that would help her grow.

“I chose to live on campus because university would be much easier if I was close to everything. I also wanted the experience of moving out of home and living in a new place. Living on Res has helped me gain independence and confidence in ways I never imagined.”

From the moment Emily arrived, the sense of community exceeded her expectations. She imagined spending most of her time in her room, but quickly discovered there was far more to Res life.

“I was most surprised by how many events happened here. There’s always something going on - it’s a great way to engage with the community and meet people.”

On my very first day, I made friends. Everyone is so friendly and welcoming, it’s easy to connect and find your place.

How easy was it to make friends?

Emily describes the community vibe in one word: welcoming. Whether it’s a chat in the hallway or a friendly conversation on the way to class, she’s found that no one is left on the sidelines and that “it feels as though everyone has a place on Res”. Emily comments that “friendship groups are always open to newcomers or students who may not know anyone, making the transition to university life much smoother”.

When asked about her favourite thing about living at Deakin Res, Emily didn’t hesitate: “the events.”

From large-scale gatherings to smaller, more intimate activities, Warrnambool Res offers something for everyone.

One standout for Emily is Res Fest – Res Fest is a week full of activities immediately after everyone checks in and is packed with events like trivia nights, bush dances, bowling, escape rooms, to cupcake baking and fishing. “It’s such a fun way to meet people and try new things,” she says.

She also enjoys smaller events, like craft workshops or short trips off campus, which allow her to build closer connections. And then there are the hallway-hosted dinners - themed nights often paired with trivia or games. “They’re always so much fun, and I usually leave with leftovers!”

Our point is … transitioning into life on Campus is made all the better (and fun!) with our extensive and intentional events programming.

Living on campus isn’t just about the social life, however. For Emily, the convenience and study support have been just as important.

“Being so close to classrooms gives me more time to study before and after class. Plus, the study spaces around Res are great for getting away from distractions.”

The residential team has been another pillar of support. “They’re always there for advice, help with problems, or just a friendly chat. They’re willing to assist with any issue, big or small – either personal or academic.”

When she needs a quiet place to focus or unwind, Emily heads to the top common room (as the Warrnambool Resi’s affectionately call it). With stunning views of the Hopkins River, plenty of space, and activities like pool and jigsaw puzzles, it’s both relaxing and social.

Her favourite memory so far? “Res Fest. The energy, the activities, the people - it set the tone for my whole Res experience and helped me transition into Res life right from the get go.”

Emily’s message to anyone considering Warrnambool Res is simple: take the opportunity.

“You’ll be joining an amazing community with endless chances to meet people, plenty of events and activities, and a supportive team that’s here for you 24/7. It’s more than just a place to live — it’s a place to belong, grow, and create memories you’ll never forget.”
