Making the Move to Deakin Res an Adventure
Whether this is your first move away from home or one of many, settling into a new place can feel like a big step. Try to treat it as an adventure. Living on Res is a chance to experience new things, meet new people, and grow in ways you might not expect. Staying open and curious can make all the difference.
Reaching out early helps too. Introduce yourself to other residents and let people know you’re new. It’s one of the easiest ways to get local tips, feel welcome, and start building friendships.
Getting involved is another great way to feel at home. Attend Res events, explore what’s happening in your local area, visit markets, volunteer, join a sports team, or try a new class. These experiences help create connections and make Res feel more than just a place to live.
Take some time to explore your neighborhood as well. Walk, ride, or drive around to locate nearby essentials like supermarkets, pharmacies, libraries, and post offices. Knowing where things are will help you feel more settled and confident.
It’s also okay to bring small pieces of home with you. Photos or meaningful items can help ease homesickness, while still allowing space for new experiences.
Most importantly, be patient with yourself. Feeling at home takes time, and that’s completely normal.
We look forward to welcoming you and seeing you at the many exciting events happening across the year. If you have any questions about your arrival, please contact your campus team. You can find their information here
