Burwood Residential Leader Satika is one cool customer. Whether it's reflecting on the future of A.I. or running events for big groups of residents, she takes things in her stride.
Life on Res has helped Satika thrive, and we caught up to gain some insights into her experience living at our Burwood campus.
How have you found the move from the Philippines to Melbourne, and why did you decide to live on Res?
I decided to live on Res because it is so much more than just a residential space. I knew I would not only be safe and secure, but also supported in the areas of wellbeing, friendship, and personal growth while studying. My move here was smooth and amazing due to how easily I settled in and felt like I belong here, largely thanks to Res.
How are you enjoying your Computer Science degree so far, and what led you to study this?
My degree has been very insightful so far and I was able to develop a lot of technical skills in the area of computer science. I have always been interested in computers and software and working with them comes naturally to me, so I decided to take this degree.
With the proliferation of AI interfaces like chat GPT and Midjourney and their integration in day-to-day life and the workplace, how do you see this affecting the IT industry in the next 20 years or so, and what is your attitude towards it as someone coming into the industry?
I think the proliferation of ChatGPT and similar tools have increased the awareness and appreciation of AI among the general public. It has also streamlined the process of gathering information and accomplishing many other tasks, which could benefit a range of industries in conducting workplace tasks. For example, in the IT industry, ChatGPT has become an alternative to popular developer forums like Stack Overflow in helping developers troubleshoot issues and learn more about different engineering aspects.
I don't think AI is yet to overtake certain job roles, however, it is a valuable tool in increasing productivity if used correctly. For this reason, I am open to using AI in my career in the future.
What are some of the most rewarding things about your role as a Residential Leader (RL)?
One of the most rewarding things about being an RL is getting to support Ressies through their time at university and at Res through various events and interactions and hearing how valuable this support was to them.
Tell us about life in Burwood – what are some of the highlights of life on Res in general?
There is always something new to experience here at Burwood, from arts and crafts to sports to musical and theatre performances. There is always an event out there for everyone. Facilities here are also great and very conducive to study. I love being five minutes away from class too.
What are you hoping to do once you finish your studies – any particular are of computer science or business setting you’d like to work in?
I aspire to be a software developer and create striking websites and apps from the ground up.
