From Regional to Res: Scarlett’s Story
Moving away from home is a big step, especially when you’re coming from a small, close-knit community. For Scarlett, that leap meant leaving Horsham in the Grampians region and starting a new chapter 2.5 hours away in Warrnambool as a Bachelor of Occupational Therapy student. Now in her second year, she’s not only found her place on Res but has stepped into a leadership role helping others do the same.
“I grew up in Horsham and lived at home with my parents while completing school at St Brigid’s College,” Scarlett shares. “Coming to uni felt like a huge change, and I knew I wanted to set myself up with the right support system.”
Finding the Right Start
Choosing to live on campus was an easy decision for Scarlett. Like many students moving away for the first time, she was looking for connection, support, and a sense of belonging.
“I wanted to make friends quickly and feel connected while adjusting to university life” she says. “Living on Res also helped make managing the cost of moving away from home a bit easier. It just felt like the best way to start.”
That decision paid off almost immediately - but not without a few nerves at the beginning.
From Nerves to New Beginnings
“When I first moved in, I was really anxious,” Scarlett admits. “I wasn’t sure if I was ready to live independently. Cooking, cleaning, and looking after myself felt like a lot.”
But those worries didn’t last long.
“After Check In Day and Res Fest (Warrnambool’s Residential Orientation Period), everything started to shift. I felt less anxious and more excited. It really felt like the beginning of something new.”
Stepping Into Leadership
Now in her second year, Scarlett is part of the Residential Leader (RL) Program, where she supports students who reside in our shared houses referred to as the ‘Wallys’.
“My role involves checking in with residents, attending meetings, walking around Res, and organising events like shared dinners and paint-on-canvas nights,” she explains. “As a team, we focus on creating a safe, inclusive, and welcoming environment for everyone.”
Scarlett made her mark on Res long before stepping into a Residential Leader role. A regular at Res events throughout her first year, she was passionate about helping create inclusive, welcoming communities. Her positive impact didn’t go unnoticed, and in 2025 she was awarded the Emerging Leader, Student Experience Award.
“That recognition meant so much to me,” she says. “It showed that the people around me, my friends, fellow RLs, and the Campus Life team see my potential. It really boosted my confidence and reminded me how strong the support network is here.”
Growing Along the Way
Through her time on Res and in her leadership role, Scarlett has developed skills that extend far beyond the classroom.
“I’ve become a lot more confident and improved my communication skills” she says. “I’ve also learned how to build a community where everyone feels safe, supported, and included.”
A Message to Future Residents
For students who might be unsure about making the move, Scarlett has simple advice:
“Living on Res is one of the best ways to start your university journey. You instantly gain a community and a support network.”
And it’s that sense of belonging that has made all the difference.
“The idea of ‘Belong Better’ really comes to life here. You’re surrounded by people who support you from day one, and it makes the transition from home so much easier and so much more enjoyable.”
From finding her feet in first year to helping others navigate the same transition, Scarlett’s experience brings the idea of Belong Better to life. Res gave her a place to grow, lead, and feel supported every step of the way.
For domestic students making the move away from home, Scarlett’s journey shows that Res isn’t just accommodation, it’s a community where you can truly belong.
