Keeping things running smoothly on construction sites is no mean feat. Organising trades, materials, timelines and ensuring deadlines are met requires a cool head and an eye for detail. Res alum Campbell Mason relishes this opportunity in his current role with Norris Construction Group, where he does all this and more.
Currently completing his studies in Civil Engineering at Deakin, Campbell has been with Norris Group since 2019, and feels that the skills he gained as a Residential Leader while living on campus have helped him greatly in the workforce. He says,
A lot of the communication side of things, management, organisation, leadership and all those skills that were learned, developed and progressed in my time as an RL have really helped me transition into the workforce. I learned how to effectively communicate with everyone and that’s helped me deal with clients, businesses and workers on site as well.
Originally from Horsham in Victoria’s Wimmera region, Campbell moved to Res hoping to meet new people, develop independence and have a lot of fun. He wasn’t disappointed with life on campus, saying,
I definitely developed a lot as a person, had a great time, met a lot of friends and still keep in touch with them. That’s helped with getting work, networking and staying connected across the trade.
One of the key benefits of Res for Campbell was ongoing connection to fellow Engineering students through the faculty meetings set up by the staff at DRS.
At Res they have heaps of study spaces and we’d often sit down and review lectures and go through seminar questions together. As uni is reasonably difficult you can lose a bit of motivation, so it’s really helpful that it’s just a short walk and you can go study together and help motivate each other’, says Campbell.
Outside of study, Campbell made the most of the sporting opportunities on campus, particularly enjoying Res Sport at Waurn Ponds, saying it was a great way to meet a lot of people, get away from study and have some free time and fun.
In years to come, Campbell hopes to progress into Project Management, using the range of skills he’s developed through university and in the workplace. He is also passionate about sustainability and utilising recycled materials, inspired by the way his workplace recycles a lot of its plastic and concrete waste back into the construction process.
When asked if he has any advice for future students considering life on Res, Campbell says,
It’s daunting at the start but once you get there you’ll be surprised how easily you’ll make friends because everyone’s in the same situation as you are, and DRS run heaps of programs where you can make friends, meet people, and it definitely helped through my time at uni heaps.
