Honouring Culture, Community and Connection During NAIDOC Week

From Sunday 5 July to Sunday 12 July 2026, Deakin Res is proud to celebrate NAIDOC Week, an important opportunity to recognise and celebrate the histories, cultures and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. 

As a community spread across multiple campuses, we recognise that each of our residences is located on the Traditional Lands of Aboriginal peoples, and we’re grateful for the opportunity to learn from and celebrate the cultures, histories and contributions of the Traditional Custodians of these lands. 

This year’s celebrations will see residents across our campuses take part in a range of activities designed to encourage learning, connection and reflection, while celebrating the rich cultures of the Traditional Custodians of the lands on which our campuses are located. 

Warrnambool | Gunditjmara Country 

Warrnambool residents will visit the Gunditjmara Aboriginal Cooperative for a day of cultural activities and lunch. This experience provides an opportunity to connect with local Aboriginal culture, learn from community members, and deepen understanding through shared experiences. 

Geelong | Wadawurrung Country 

Located on Wadawurrung Country, residents at both our Waurn Ponds and Waterfront campuses will have the opportunity to visit the Wathaurong Booln Booln Cultural Centre, where they’ll learn about the history, culture and traditions of the local Aboriginal community.  

Throughout the week, residents can also put their knowledge to the test at our NAIDOC Trivia Night, featuring dedicated rounds that celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures and achievements in a fun and engaging way. 

Our residence reception desks at both Geelong campuses will also host NAIDOC desk activations throughout the week, with interactive activities designed to encourage participation and spark meaningful conversations. 

Melbourne Burwood | Wurundjeri Country 

Located on Wurundjeri Country of the Kulin Nation, our Burwood residents can take part in the much-loved Waabiny Workshop, led by Indigenous artist Kiri Tawhai. This hands-on creative experience has become a favourite in previous years and offers residents a meaningful way to engage with Indigenous culture through art. 

Residents can also come together for a NAIDOC Movie Night, featuring a screening of The Sapphires in the Burwood Movie Room. 

Celebrating together 

At Deakin Res, we’re committed to creating opportunities for residents to learn about, engage with and celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures and achievements. 

Whether it’s through cultural experiences, creative workshops, interactive activities or coming together as a community, NAIDOC Week is an opportunity to listen, learn, reflect and celebrate together. As we recognise the enduring cultures, knowledge and contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, we encourage all residents to get involved, deepen their understanding and be part of this important week of recognition and celebration.
