Starting university is an exciting milestone in your life. Not only are you beginning your studies, but you’ll probably be starting work, meeting new people, and for many of you, moving out of home for the very first time.

All of that change can feel a little daunting. New faces, new routines, and countless new possibilities. But one thing you should know from the very start is that you won’t be doing any of this alone. Alongside your fellow residents, you’ll have the support of a dedicated team of Residential Leaders (RLs) who have lived on Res for at least a year and understand exactly what you’re going through. Having been in your shoes, they know what it’s like to take those first steps into uni life and how to make the transition smoother.

Our RL team is made up of residents from a wide range of backgrounds, courses, and hometowns. Some grew up just around the corner, others have travelled from overseas. All share one goal, creating a welcoming, inclusive, and supportive community for everyone who lives at Deakin Res.

Your RLs are your go to people on Res. They’ll help you settle in, connect you with events, answer questions, and check in to make sure you’re doing okay. From running BBQs and trivia nights to helping you find support services, their goal is to make Deakin Res feel like home. They’re also trained to provide guidance if you’re facing challenges, whether academic, social, or personal, they can connect you with the right support when needed.

We spoke to some of our incoming RL’s and asked them to answer some questions for you.

The best advice I can give to new residents is…

Say yes to as much as you can!

I knew I belong at Res when…

I went to an event and knew most of the other residents.

Going to Res events helped me feel part of something bigger because...

They bring together residents from all backgrounds to connect, laugh, and celebrate together.

This Trivia Night was one of the most unforgettable events for me. I joined a team of residents I barely knew, and we ended up winning 3rd place! It was such a fun night that showed how quickly Res can turn strangers into friends. The Res community really is really like one big family!

My favorite memory so far…

Games night with pancakes or toasties. It’s so great to just spend time with other residents in a low-pressure setting, plus the free food is great!

Res helped me feel safe and supported because…

It allowed me to be my true self and express myself in a way I resonated with.

This spot on Res feels like home to me because…

There’s nothing like watching the sunset over the creek after a long day, tackling assignments with a view that makes studying feel lighter, and cooking up a meal with friends while laughter fills the space. It’s the kind of place that makes Res feel real, not just where I live, but where I grow.
