In her first year of studying Biomedical Science, Lucy Griffiths was selected as a recipient on one of Deakin Res’ Experience Grants. A graduate of Newhaven College (Phillip Island), Lucy first chose to study at Deakin because she liked the location, preferring somewhere close to the coast and a campus outside of Melbourne.
Deakin’s reputation was also a factor, and notes that she “…had only heard of people enjoying their experience” at the university. Having the opportunity meet new and people and “jump straight into the university experience” was a key factor in her decision to also apply to live on campus at the Waterfront residences.
Lucy notes that she’s already had a great time settling into her new home.
She’s also loved the events program on offer through Deakin Res, highlighting that morning walks have been a great way to start the day. “Dinners being provided during residential orientation were also brilliant, because I came here with no cooking skills, so I knew that I would have at least one decent meal!”
A typical day for Lucy more recently has involved logging into classes online, making use of the communal study rooms for group work, and hanging out with her housemates in the lounge room during breaks. Every couple of weeks she returns home to catch up with family to alleviate any homesickness but notes that she’s happy to spend most of her weekends on campus or in the local area.
For those exploring options to live on campus, Lucy highlights that it’s important to do your research.
“Find out what best suits you, because there’s a lot of factors to consider including location and what courses are offered where. No matter what university you decide however, I would recommend considering living on campus. I’ve loved everything about living on res so far.”
