As you approach the pointy end of the trimester it's pretty normal for feelings of overwhelm to creep in. When they do, it's ok to acknowledge the emotion but then it's time to reactivate those good study habits you implemented in the past. Or, if you threw them out with your last lot of exam study notes we've got your back and have designed a Study Well Checklist just for you, that will help you establish the perfect study routine.

Study Well - Checklist

1. Gather Essential Tools

  • Have all your textbooks, notebooks, and study materials at hand.

  • Bring a water bottle to stay hydrated.

  • Keep healthy snacks nearby to boost energy levels.

2. Prepare Your Study Space

  • Choose a quiet, comfortable, and well-lit area.

  • Keep your study space clean and organized.

  • Keep a vision board or motivational quotes nearby to inspire you.

3. Set Specific Goals

  • Define what you want to achieve in each study session (e.g., read 30 pages, complete a problem set).

4. Schedule Your Study Time

  • Choose a consistent time block for studying every day.

  • Use a planner or digital calendar to block out this time.

5. Minimise Distractions

  • Turn your phone on silent or use an app to block distracting notifications.

  • Inform roommates of your study schedule to minimise interruptions.

6. Implement Study Techniques

  • Use active learning techniques like summarizing, questioning, and reflecting.

  • Try different methods (e.g., Pomodoro Technique, mind mapping) to find what works best for you.

  • Break large tasks into smaller, manageable chunks.

  • Set mini-deadlines for each task to keep track of progress.

7. Take Regular Breaks

  • Follow the 25-5 rule (study for 25 minutes, take a 5-minute break) or similar to maintain concentration.

  • Use breaks to stretch, walk, or do a quick refresh.

8. Review and Adjust Your Plan

  • At the end of each study block, review what worked well and what didn’t.

  • Adjust your strategies and schedule to improve for the next study block.

9. Reward yourself

  • Set up a reward system for completing tasks (e.g., watch an episode of a TV show, enjoy a treat).

  • Make sure to include downtime in your daily schedule to relax and recharge.

  • Engage in activities that help reduce stress, like exercise, meditation, or hobbies.

10. Seek Support When Needed

  • Form study groups with peers to enhance learning and stay motivated.

  • Utilise res and uni resources such as study rooms, libraries, and advisors.

This checklist is designed to be comprehensive but flexible enough to adapt to individual needs and preferences. Regularly using and refining this ritual will help enhance your study effectiveness and make your university life more manageable.
