It’s been a long running tradition at our Geelong residences since 2017 to participate in a blood donation challenge each trimester and in 2021 (pre-lockdown), our amazing students have again risen to the challenge! Residents across our Geelong Waterfront and Waurn Ponds campuses gave up their time in Trimester 1 to donate blood in a ‘life blood’ college vs college competition.
Final residential college tallies were as follows:
Alfred Deakin College – 8 donations
Barton College – 10 donations
Willem Yaluk – 10 donations
Brougham House – 14 donations
Parkes College – 14 donations
With every blood donation saving 3 lives, these 56 donations collectively saved 168 lives! As joint winners, residents of Parkes College and Brougham House receive a celebratory team dinner.
Residential Leaders, Olivia and Mia, led the way at Parkes College. Olivia notes that she wanted to be involved “…because of the many benefits of giving blood – and the free food after the donation is a bonus!” As a first-time donor Olivia is keen to share her positive experience and hopes to donate many more times in the future.
Eliza Hart, Waurn Ponds Campus Life Coordinator, highlights that the competition is a fantastic opportunity for residents who want to make a difference in their local area. “It’s really all about friendship, community and a little inter-college competition always helps.”
With the donation challenge running again in Trimester 2, and college pride on the line, our residents, including Mia and Olivia are no doubt looking forward to rolling up their sleeves for a good cause.
