Originally from South India, Tanya is studying a Bachelor of Design with a major in Architecture at Deakin University's Geelong Waterfront campus.
Growing up in different parts of the Middle East and Africa, Tanya developed a love for different cultures and creative thinking. Her interest in design was sparked when she volunteered with a charity in India, helping to improve ventilation in homes, and it was this experience that influenced her to pick a career that was both creative and improved people’s lives.
Knowing the world was her oyster, Tanya searched the globe for the perfect course that would fulfil her passion and propel her into a successful career but ultimately choosing Deakin's Waterfront Campus was an easy decision for her.
I chose to live at Deakin’s Geelong Waterfront campus because it is in a lively city by the seaside and the buildings have a long architectural history associated with them, many of them predating even Sydney and Melbourne. I was given an opportunity to apply for scholarships here. It was here that I received the Deakin-India scholarship.”
Having lived in boarding schools in India for her final six years of education, Tanya was already familiar with living out of home, but her stay at DeakinRes has thus far exceeded her expectations.
I do enjoy the level of freedom, respect and fun that you can have on Res. The activities I get to choose are a fun bonus … and it’s nice to have my friends nearby. I’m a bit of a homebody, but occasionally I like to play foosball upstairs in the Level 11 Common Room, or chill with friends in the Wellness Room. We also pick days of the week to visit each other in our apartments.
Over and above this, Tanya has a passion for multimedia visual artistry and occasionally sources resources from the Architecture Workshop to pursue such.
Living on Campus has not only brought Tanya personal joy, it has also supported her academic endeavours and aspirations.
Being right next to Campus and having a close proximity to the CBD helps with getting architecture-specific materials. I have a membership at the Geelong Illustrators gallery, so I love to sit and create with other artists, who inspire me to push myself further.
Managing the balance of study and life has been made much easier by living on Res, too.
Living on Res has made it much easier. I have time to pursue architecture events and learn beyond the course, and also have time for my art and working at galleries. I don’t need to own a car and everything is within my reach. Commuting is a time-consuming process and living on Res eliminates it entirely.Res is a safe and supportive place to live, which makes the jump of going to an entirely different country so much more comfortable and easy.
