Better Outcomes Start Here

When you think about heading off to university, you may imagine lectures, textbooks, and study sessions. But there’s another crucial part of the experience that shapes who you become: where you live.

At Deakin Residential Services, living on campus isn’t just a practical choice - it’s a powerful, life-shaping experience. For many students, it’s where they discover who they are, form lifelong friendships, and build the personal skills that carry them far beyond graduation.

We spoke with several Deakin Res alumni who shared how their time on campus had a lasting impact on their growth, confidence, and career paths.

A Community Built for Belonging

From the moment students arrive, they’re welcomed into a genuine community. Deakin Res is intentionally designed to help all students feel safe, supported, and included. With thoughtfully designed spaces, a diverse range of events, and living and learning environments that cater to different needs and preferences, every student has the opportunity to thrive.

Alumnus Adit recalls:

What made the difference was the respect everyone had for each other. It wasn’t just a place to sleep - it was a place where people looked out for one another.

That sense of belonging isn’t just a bonus - it’s the foundation for personal growth, wellbeing, and academic success and is the heart behind all we do here.

Support That Goes Beyond the Basics

Deakin Res offers far more than physical safety. With 24/7 support, regular wellbeing check-ins, dedicated staff, and trained Residential Leaders, students are surrounded by people who genuinely care. This will give you peace of mind, knowing that you aren’t navigating early adulthood alone - you're guided with care, every step of the way.

Lauren, now a practising lawyer, shares:

There was always someone there. [And] it was that emotional safety net that gave me the confidence to focus on my studies and myself.

Growing Independence, One Step at a Time

Moving out of home is a big milestone. At Deakin Res, students are given the space to grow - but you're not left to figure it all out alone. From learning to cook and manage your time, to engaging in workshops and sharing responsibilities, it’s a structured, supported introduction to independent living.

Magenta, a psychologist and former resident, reflects:

You don’t realise how many life skills you pick up until you leave. Res gave me structure, support, and a sense of purpose — all of which I carry into my work today.

Real Leadership in Action

For students ready to take the next step, the opportunity to become a Residential Leader is a meaningful pathway to personal and professional growth. It’s leadership in action - planning events, mentoring peers, and managing real-world responsibilities.

These experiences do more than build a resume - they shape confident, capable professionals.

Jacob, who now works in education, explains:

Being a Residential Leader gave me confidence to speak up, solve problems, and lead with empathy. It shaped the way I now work with students, as a teacher.

Inclusion That’s Intentional

At Deakin Res, inclusion is more than a value - it’s intrinsic to who we are and what we believe. The environment is built to support every student, no matter their background, personality, or preferences. Whether you are outgoing or reserved, local or international, you will find a place where you feel seen and supported.

Adit remembers:

The small things mattered — like raising different flags during cultural celebrations. You felt like you were part of something bigger.

 Lasting Impact, Lifelong Growth

Time and again, Deakin Res alumni share the same message: living on campus wasn’t just part of their university experience — it defined it. It shaped their confidence, their careers, and their sense of self.

Lauren sums it up:

Res gave me more than just a place to live. It gave me community, leadership skills, lifelong friends — and a stronger version of myself.

Living at Deakin Res is about more than just being close to campus - it’s about preparing students for what comes next. Because when students feel a true sense of belonging, they don’t just get through their studies - they thrive both academically and personally.
And that’s the heart of what we do at Deakin Res: helping residents Belong Better, so they can achieve Better Outcomes.
