There’s a certain energy that sweeps across Res when assessment time rolls around. Study spaces start to fill, caffeine consumption climbs, and suddenly everyone is juggling deadlines, exams, and everything in between.
If you’re thinking about living on campus, here’s something important to know: no matter which Res community you choose, you won’t be facing assessment season on your own.
Residents are supported year‑round, but assessment time shines a spotlight on the extra ways Res helps you manage the pressure. From focus‑friendly study spaces and wellbeing initiatives to low‑key events designed to help you reset, everything is built to support you academically and personally. Because getting through the assessment crunch isn’t just about studying harder - it’s about having the right environment and people around you, every step of the way.
A Consistent Support System, Wherever You Are
While each campus has its own personality, the way residents are supported during assessment time is consistent across Res.
At Burwood, Study Week might include an Exam Care Pack and Chat, with soup, warm drinks, and simple activities like colouring or fidget toys - small things that make it easier to pause and recharge. Residents can also fuel up and focus at dinner and study in the common rooms, enjoying a hot meal in a quiet space without ever needing to leave the comfort of the Burwood residences.
That same balance of productivity and wellbeing carries across all campuses. In Geelong (Waurn Ponds and Waterfront), residents might unwind with therapy dogs, slow things down with mindful colouring, or grab a coffee and muffin between study blocks. In Warrnambool, similar support runs throughout study and exam periods, from free food and wellbeing activities to some much‑needed cuddles with furry friends.
The offerings may look a little different from campus to campus, but the intention is always the same: making sure you feel supported, wherever you live.
Spaces to Focus & Reset
Having access to the right space can make a big difference during assessment time. Across Res, you’ll find plenty of focus‑friendly spaces to suit every study mood. Alongside your own study setup in your room, there are quiet areas for locking in, shared spaces for group work, and comfy lounge‑style spots that make late‑night study sessions feel a little less tiring and a lot more social.
And when your brain needs a break (because it definitely will), we’ve got that covered too. Spaces like the Zen Zone at Burwood, the Wellness Space at Waterfront, and the Book Nook at Warrnambool are perfect for hitting pause and resetting. Whether it’s a quick breather between classes or a proper switch‑off during peak stress time, these cosy calm zones are always there when you need them.
Staying Connected Matters
It’s easy to retreat into your own bubble during exams, but staying connected can make all the difference.
That’s why Res continues to run relaxed, inclusive events throughout the assessment period. Think game nights, movie nights, and casual catch‑ups. These low‑pressure Res events give residents the chance to step away from the books, take a break, and feel part of the community.
There are also simple opportunities to shift your headspace, whether that’s a walk and coffee catch‑up or unwinding in shared spaces with others. Sometimes, a small change of scenery is exactly what you need.
Wellbeing Support That’s Built In
Support at Res isn’t something that appears only when exams hit - it’s built into everyday campus life.
A big part of this support comes from Residential Leaders (RLs). RLs are students who live within the community and provide day‑to‑day guidance and connection. During assessment and exam periods, their role becomes even more important.
They’re often the first point of contact if you’re feeling overwhelmed, need help finding support services, or just want someone to check in with. You’ll see them running events, creating welcoming spaces, and making sure residents stay connected. Sometimes, it’s just a quick chat or a familiar face, but those small moments can make a big difference during high‑pressure times.
More Than Just a Place to Live
If you’re considering living on campus, assessment time is when the Res experience really shows its value.
No matter whether you choose Burwood, Waurn Ponds, Waterfront, or Warrnambool, you’ll have access to:
· Supportive study spaces
· Wellbeing‑focused events
· Opportunities to stay connected
· A built‑in community that understands the realities of uni life
The event names and campus vibes may change, but the level of care stays the same. And when you’re in the middle of exams, having a community that genuinely supports your wellbeing can make all the difference as you work toward your study goals.
