Are you thinking about studying at Deakin University and living at Deakin Res? We recently sat down with two of our international residents and asked them a few questions. Let's hear what Anouk and Ojaswit, have to say about their experiences so far!

Meet Anouk and Ojaswit

Anouk, from Sri Lanka, is studying Commerce, focusing on Finance, Business Analytics, and Emerging Tech. In her free time, she enjoys painting, photography, and watching Netflix. Anouk says that living at DeakinRes feels like being part of a warm and welcoming second family.

Ojaswit, from New Delhi, India, is studying Design. He loves gaming, creating music playlists, and hanging out with friends. He also finds Deakin Res to be a supportive and friendly community.

Q. How easy is it to apply?

A. The application process is easy.

Applying for accommodation might seem daunting, but Anouk and Ojaswit found it super easy! Anouk described it as "simple and straightforward," while Ojaswit said it took him less than 10 minutes to complete the application.

Q. What is the Deakin Res community like?

A. It's really supportive and welcoming.

When they arrived, both Anouk and Ojaswit were pleasantly surprised by the level of support available. The Campus Life Team is there to help with everything, from academics to mental health. Ojaswit was particularly impressed by how easy it was to access mental health support, which is confidential and readily available.

Q. How hard is it to meet new people?

A. Deakin Res offers a range of small and large events to help you connect with your fellow residents.

Making friends in a new country can be challenging, but DeakinRes makes it easier. Anouk remembers her first day, where everyone was friendly and eager to connect. She says attending Res events helped her build lasting friendships. Ojaswit, who was initially shy, found that becoming a Residential Leader opened up opportunities to meet new people and create a sense of community.

Q. What should I bring from home?

A. Bring whatever makes you feel comfortable

Anouk brought photos, postcards, and elephant-themed items to remind her of home. Ojaswit packed a framed Squidward print, a cozy jacket, and essential items like power adapters. Their advice? Bring whatever makes you feel comfortable.

Q. What advice would you share with someone thinking about moving to Deakin Res.

Anouk's advice:

  1. Be open-minded.

  2. Don’t be nervous.

  3. Be excited!

Ojaswit's advice:

  1. Take care of your mental and emotional health.

  2. Be open to other cultures.

  3. Think about how your actions impact your future.

He also suggests staying connected to your industry by joining clubs, attending events, and using LinkedIn.

Final Thoughts

Both Anouk and Ojaswit agree that living at Deakin Res is an amazing experience. It’s a place where you can grow, make new friends, and feel at home, even when you’re far away from your family.

If you're considering Deakin, take their advice: come with an open heart and mind. DeakinRes isn't just a place to stay; it's a community that could become your home away from home.

Applications for 2025 are now open. We can't wait to welcome you to Deakin Res!
