Here are some tips for helping your teen navigate their first move away from home:
Money Matters:
It's normal for the financial side of things to feel a bit overwhelming at first. Help your teen get a grip on budgeting by introducing them to resources like the 50/30/20 Budget. This approach makes it easier for them to understand where their money should go and how much they can save. After they've got their essentials covered, let them have some freedom with their "wants" money—whether it's avocado toast or their favourite coffee spot. The important thing is they learn to live within their means.
Keep in Touch:
With your teen moving miles away, staying connected might need a bit of a makeover. Instead of the casual check-ins at home, find a new rhythm for communication that works for both of you. It could be a weekly video call or even a daily emoji exchange. Let them take the lead on what feels comfortable. And always remind them that you're there if they need anything, even if it's just a virtual shoulder to lean on.
Respect Goes Both Ways:
Moving into a new living situation, like on-campus housing, means joining a diverse community. This brings exciting opportunities but also some potential challenges. Have open conversations with your teen about respecting others' values and boundaries. Resources like our RESPECT: Community Values can act as a starting point for discussions. You can also talk about common roommate disagreements, like chores or noise levels, and help them brainstorm ways to handle these situations respectfully.
Moving out for the first time is a big step, but with your guidance and support, your teen can navigate it with confidence. Lisa Marks a fellow parent reflects on how the on-campus experience benefited her daughter.
Broadening her world view, street smarts, gaining experience and independent living skills, taking responsibility for herself, learning to balance and manage time well. Doing her own shopping, cooking, washing, cleaning, and gaining a new found appreciation of home and parents!
