Earlier this year we shared current resident Daniella’s experiences living on campus. Having
conducted careful research prior to her time joining Deakin as a student and resident, Daniella shared with us her advice for those considering their options for the future. She has three key tips:
1. Book in a campus and accommodation tour and get a feel for your University!
Don’t be afraid to ask the tour guide to show you where the buildings are for your course and to show you what type of residential rooms are available (for example, studios versus shared flats). Your living and learning environments are really important to your success and motivation to study, and you’re more likely to succeed if you enjoy being in your physical
environment but also feel supported and welcomed. Living on campus at Deakin has exceeded my expectations in the best possible way. I would recommend to everybody considering living on campus whilst studying at university!
2. Find out what types of flexibility and support the University offers.
Not just in relation to your studies, but for your health or financial needs. At Deakin there is so much support available and the unit chairs and tutors really want to help you succeed.
3. Your ATAR (final tertiary score) and grades really don’t define you at all.
Once you’ve been accepted into your course and start classes no one even mentions what scores or grades you achieved. Everyone is so excited to make friends, embrace new experiences, make new memories and take on opportunities, whilst also being focused on their current university classes and studies. The competitiveness and pressure to complete everything to perfection definitely fades, and it’s a much more enjoyable learning environment when you’re responsible for your own studies and have your own independence.
Keen to experience campus yourself? Our campus videos highlighted below take you around each of our campuses through the eyes of four of our current residents. And once you've seen those you can book an in person campus tour.
