February is a big month at Deakin Res, and it’s big because it’s all about YOU.
We get to welcome hundreds of new residents across our four campuses who are starting the next chapter of their lives, in their new homes! (We’re excited just talking about it!) Each campus has its own vibe and some nuances, but regardless of this — there are a few things that every new resident can count on in the lead up to Check-In Day, as well as the day itself!
Before you arrive, we’ll email you everything you need to know, so make sure you’re checking your inbox! You’ll get all the details about arrival guidelines and what to expect. Plus, we’ve got a super helpful online induction program to make your transition a breeze. It’s full of useful info about campus life, our rules, and our RESPECT values. Even though the induction and emails are super informative, we know that you may still have some question(s), so you are welcome and so encouraged to give us a bell!
(Did we mention that we’re staffed 24 hours a day? So even if it’s 02:00am and you think of a question, just give us a call or send us an email! We’re always here for you, literally!)
We cover this in our emails too so don’t worry too much, but here are a few handy tips. You’ve probably got the basics down pat (sheets, pillows, towels — you know the deal), but here’s where it gets fun, you get to bring anything that’ll make your new place feel like home. Some of our past residents have shared their top packing tips which included: photos from home, a camera, beach towel, Bluetooth speaker, a tote bag, diary, posters, sewing kit, a sports ball (your pick!), a musical instrument, surfboard, cookbooks and anything else you think of.
And don’t stress if you forget something — you’ll be in a prime location! All our campuses are close to supermarkets and shopping centres, so if you need to pick something up, you’ve got plenty of time to grab it and no doubt … some of your fellow resi’s will be in the same boat, so what was initially stressful, could turn in to a midnight Kmart run and go down as one of your most memorable Res moments!
Alright, now let’s talk about the big day itself! It can definitely feel like a whirlwind—navigating campus, unloading all your stuff and thinking “I swear I didn’t bring this much stuff!” (we’ve all been there don’t worry) and calming your nerves – but it’s also the start of something exciting: meeting new people, getting your independent life started, and diving into the next chapter of your academic journey. Sure, it’s a little nerve-wracking, but we promise: the pros far outweigh the cons. And we’re here to make it as easy as possible!
Once you’ve finished check-in, it will be time to meet some key people! Our Orientation Program is designed to make this process easy and fun. First, you’ll have the opportunity to meet your Res Leaders, some key staff and of course your housemates, (some of whom may well become your new besties!) then some residents in other buildings, and finally, other folks from your College or Uni Course. By the end of it, you’ll find your tribe and feel like you’ve been part of the Deakin Res family for ages!
And here’s the best part about this whole “moving on to Res” thing: almost everyone around you is in the same boat! Firstly, most new residents won’t know anyone else, so it’s the perfect chance to meet people on your floor or in your building. And secondly, as a first-year, you’re in great company—everyone around you (except for the Residential Leaders) is new to campus. Our returning residents won’t move in until the following week, so really—everyone’s a first-timer. You’re not alone in this!
Your Res Leaders will have some fun ice-breakers and get-to-know-you games planned to help you make connections. Plus, there’ll be plenty of chances to mingle over shared meals and join in on activities throughout Check-In Day and the days after. By the end of it, you’ll feel really settled. A really important thing to remember though, is that you can take this whole thing at your own pace and integrate as you feel comfortable. This is your journey, and you control the speed, so rest easy ... it doesn’t matter whether you’re ready to jump all in or take it a bit slower, our intentionally designed Orientation Program, dedicated staff and Helpful Humans, will support you every step of the way.
We can’t wait to welcome you to Deakin Res in 2025! Check out this video for a sneak peek of Check-In Day. Trust us—you’re going to love it! See you soon!
